Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard is expected to complete a transfer to Leicester City in the days to come. Several sources have quoted a fee of around £15 million to be paid by the Foxes for the player.
The Foxes are in a difficult situation defensively. They lost Wesley Fofana to a medial ligament injury and he will be out for the rest of the year. On the other hand, Jonny Evans is also ruled out until September which leaves Brendan Rodgers stacked short for centre-backs.
There were rumours that Ozan Kabak of Schalke was one of the targets for Rodgers, but Vestergaard has now emerged as the number one option. There has been no bid for Kabak, while Vestergaard has reportedly told his teammates that he intends to move on from Southampton this summer.
The Danish defender only has one year remaining on his current deal, and he would have been a free agent if Southampton didn’t put him on the market. The Saints are now cashing in on the player rather than losing him for nothing in 2022. He is yet to fully agree on personal terms with Leicester City ahead of the transfer.
Leicester and Southampton have an agreement for the transfer, and it should be confirmed very soon. Vestergaard joined the Saints three years ago from Borussia Monchengladbach and has been quite impressive for them throughout this time. His experience of the Premier League and now, exposure to Europe, can make him one of the top defensive talents in the league this season.
