Lanterns Trailer Just Confirmed the DCU’s Boldest Torch-Passing Yet — John Stewart Isn’t Backup, He’s the Successor

He signed up thinking he’d be the understudy. The new “Lanterns” trailer makes clear John Stewart is actually being handed the ring — and Hal Jordan may not be sticking around to see how he wears it.

The Torch-Passing Twist at the Trailer’s Core

The footage frames John Stewart’s arrival with a classic misdirection — he joins the Corps believing he’s simply Hal Jordan’s backup, only to gradually realize his actual role is to succeed him. That reframing turns a familiar legacy-hero setup into something with genuine emotional stakes, especially with two actors as grounded as Chandler and Pierre carrying the weight of it.

The Manhunters Step Into the Spotlight

Beyond the mentor-successor dynamic, the trailer confirms the Manhunters as the season’s central threat, with Sinestro also making an appearance. For a franchise that’s mostly kept its cosmic mythology in the background, putting the Manhunters front and center signals a series willing to lean into deep-cut Green Lantern lore rather than playing it safe.

A Detective Story Wearing a Superhero Costume

Structurally, Lanterns is being built less like a typical superhero series and more like a slow-burn mystery, with the show’s own creative team citing True Detective and Slow Horses as tonal touchstones. The story follows Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart investigating a death on Earth that unravels into something far bigger — a framing device that should give the show room to explore character before spectacle.

Who’s Behind and In Front of the Camera

The series comes from creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with Mundy serving as showrunner. Alongside Chandler and Pierre, the cast includes Kelly Macdonald and Nathan Fillion reprising his role as Guy Gardner, plus Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, and Nicole Ari Parker. Slow Horses director James Hawes helms the first two episodes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov directing the rest.
