Girona had already confirmed last week that they were open to the idea of playing in the United States. As it would represent a “great opportunity for expansion” for the club and the city.

“The request, signed by Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, Girona president Delfi Geli and LaLiga president Javier Tebas, was submitted to the RFEF late Monday. ” a statement from La Liga said. The submission has been made after successfully completing the first key steps with several stakeholders. One of the elements of the request is the compensation offered to Girona season ticket holders. They have this fixture included in their season ticket. Aficiones Unidas (AFEPE), an association of fan clubs, has welcomed this compensation package.”

The players had previously been said to be “outraged” at the idea to play La Liga matches in the US. Sergio Busquets spoke about it in the press conference ahead of Spain vs Croatia. He said: “We can’t deny it or say yes, we’re look for solutions that will be best for the football players. We want things to be done well.” The Spanish Players Union (AFE) met with La Liga on Monday. They said players would make the “final decision”.

La Liga recently struck a 15-year deal with sports and entertainment group Relevant Sports. Though the decision to stage this match across the Atlantic has been highly controversial. But if it is approved by the RFEF, it could well be the first of many.
