Kingston XS1000 External SSD Review: Compact, Affordable, and Efficient

Kingston XS1000 External SSD Complete Review: Should You Buy in 2024 or Not?

In our digital world, the need for external storage is increasing day by day, leading us to buy either external HDDs that have become too old, honestly or modern external SSDs. Well, I would obviously prefer the latter any day, however, the size of these SSDs might be a concern, however, you get smaller external SSDs from Kingston, Samsung, and a few others.

Enter the Kingston XS1000 External SSD, one of the smallest external SSDs, I have ever used, and it’s even smaller or comparable to Samsung’s T7 or T9s. The vibrant red color, XS1000, sent to me for review, looks gorgeous, feels easy on the hands, and performs just how you would expect an Rs. 10k SSD to perform. Now, whether you should buy this or not, let’s discuss in this short review:

Design & Build

The Kingston XS1000 is a compact powerhouse, measuring just 0.5 by 1.3 by 2.7 inches and weighing only an ounce. This pocket-sized external SSD is designed for users who need portability without sacrificing performance. I also appreciate the fact that Kingston has bundled a Type-C to USB Type-A adapter in-built into the box.

Its sleek matte black design or the gorgeous red color, we got here, makes it visually appealing, though it lacks the rugged protection or IP rating found in some competitors. While missing 256-bit AES hardware encryption, the XS1000 still offers solid performance with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, compatible with most modern laptops and desktops.

Performance

In our testing, the Kingston XS1000 performed at expected speeds for a Gen 2 SSD, with read speeds slightly outpacing writes. It offers 1TB and 2TB storage options, which may feel limiting compared to competitors like the Crucial X9 Pro or Samsung’s Portable SSD T9 that offer 4TB capacities.

As you see, the Kingston XS1000 works smoothly with any OS including macOS, where I was getting a read speed of up to 1007MB/s and a write of up to 912MB/s. The performance is fair enough, but not the fastest as the Samsung T9 or Kingston’s own XS2000, which offers up to 2000MB/s at almost double the price as this. I feel for most users, this Kingston external SSD is good enough in terms of performance.

Verdict: Value for Money

For those not needing high capacity or advanced features like ruggedization and encryption, the XS1000 is an excellent budget-friendly choice. It’s a reliable, affordable external SSD that delivers decent performance in a lightweight, portable form factor, making it a solid option for everyday storage needs.
