Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan informed on Monday that they have appointed Khalid Jamil as there new team’s head coach for the remaining part of the current season.
The former Aizawl FC and East Bengal coach takes over from Shankarlal Chakraborty, after Mohun Bagan went down 1-2 to debutants Real Kashmir FC in their I-League encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium. “With immense pleasure we wish to inform you that Khalid Jamil has been appointed as the new head coach of Mohun Bagan senior football team for remainder of 2018-2019 football season,” the press release from Mohun Bagan stated. Jamil – who guided Aizawl FC to the I-League title in 2016-17 season – will take charge of the team during the training session at the club ground on Tuesday morning.
He will have his first media interaction as coach of the sobuj maroons. Jamil’s first assignment in charge of Mohun Bagan will be a clash against defending champions Minerva Punjab at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday followed by another home game against Neroca FC on Saturday.
After a two-week break, he will then come up against his former club – East Bengal – in the return leg of I-League’s high-voltage Kolkata derby on January 27. Mohun Bagan have been extremely inconsistent this season and, especially, their form at home has been a major cause of concern. The Kolkata side is currently in the sixth position in the I-League standings with 15 points from 11 encounters.
When asked about why he chose to take up charge at Mohun Bagan when the Mariners are struggling and almost out of the title race Jamil said,” I was waiting for a good offer. I like Kolkata. I liked the offer and I accepted it. It is a big and new challenge for me. It is my pleasure to be here. I have not thought about that (championship). I am just thinking about the next match.”
