Few names shine as brightly as Khalid Jamil’s in Indian football,. A distinguished figure, Jamil has left an indelible mark both as a former player and as a head coach. Having dedicated a significant portion of his playing days to Mahindra United, Air India, and Mumbai, Jamil transitioned into football management following an early retirement in 2009, prompted by injuries.

Making history, he stands tall as the first Indian to hold the permanent head coach position in an ISL team and the sole Indian coach to guide a team to the ISL playoffs. His illustrious career is studded with achievements, including winning the I-League Best Coach Award for the 2016-17 season with Aizawl and being honored as the FPAI Indian Football Coach of the Year (2020-21) with NorthEast United FC.

From Breakthrough to Glory: Khalid Jamil’s Remarkable Journey in the ISL

Khalid Jamil’s initiation into the ISL began in the 2019-20 season when he took on the role of Head of Academy at NorthEast United FC. However, it was in the subsequent season, 2020-21, that he etched his name in the league’s history books. Initially appointed as the interim head coach, Jamil orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, leading the Highlanders to the playoffs with an impressive 10-game unbeaten streak.

Recognizing his exceptional contributions, NorthEast United FC entrusted Khalid with the position of head coach for the 2021-22 season, that marked him as the first Indian permanent head coach of an ISL club.

Before his stint with NorthEast United FC, Khalid Jamil had already left an indelible mark on the national stage. Leading Aizawl FC to the 2016-17 I-League title, he not only made history by securing the national title but also propelled Aizawl FC to become the first club from the Northeast region of India to achieve this feat. His stellar performance with Aizawl FC caught the attention of the entire Indian football fraternity, paving the way for him to take the helm at prestigious clubs like East Bengal and later, Mohun Bagan.

Managerial Career Overview

Mumbai

Following his retirement from playing, Jamil seamlessly transitioned into football management, commencing his managerial journey with Mumbai in 2009. Despite facing financial constraints, he steered the team to an 11th-place finish in the 2009–10 I-League, a commendable achievement considering the challenges. In subsequent seasons, Jamil’s strategic prowess led Mumbai to respectable 7th, 6th, and 6th positions in the 2010–11, 2014–15, and 2015–16 I-League campaigns, maintaining the club’s top-flight status for seven consecutive seasons.

Aizawl

On January 1, 2017, Jamil took on the role of head coach at Aizawl, marking a significant chapter in his managerial career. His tenure culminated in a historic triumph as Aizawl secured the 2016–17 I-League title, becoming the first club from Northeast India to claim the prestigious championship.

East Bengal

Following his success with Aizawl, Jamil accepted the position of head coach at East Bengal in July 2017, ahead of the 2017–18 I-League season. His appointment came with a record-breaking ₹12.5 million deal, making him the highest-paid Indian coach at the time.

Mohun Bagan

In January 2019, Jamil assumed the role of head coach at Mohun Bagan, succeeding Sankarlal Chakraborty for the remainder of the season.

NorthEast United

Jamil’s association with NorthEast United began in June 2019 when he was appointed as the head of the academy and assistant coach. His interim stints during the 2019–20 and 2020–21 Indian Super League seasons saw remarkable success, with NorthEast United achieving a ten-game unbeaten run and securing a spot in the 2020–21 ISL playoffs. On October 23, 2021, Jamil was named the head coach, creating history as the first Indian permanent head coach of an ISL club.

Bengaluru United

In May 2022, Bengaluru United announced Jamil as their head coach for the upcoming season. The team went on to clinch the prestigious Stafford Challenge Cup in 2023 before he handed over the reins to Spanish coach Fernando Santiago Varela in March.

Chitwan

In a move beyond Indian borders, Jamil was announced as the head coach of Nepal Super League club Chitwan on September 29, 2023, marking his foray into coaching on the international stage.

Jamshedpur

The latest chapter in Jamil’s managerial journey unfolded on December 31, 2023, as he assumed the role of head coach at Jamshedpur for the remainder of the season, succeeding Scott Cooper.
