Karma: Reference Guide

What Is Karma About?

The Karma South Korean TV series follows four individuals whose lives become inextricably connected through mysterious circumstances and shared tragedy. Each character faces their own nightmare: a witness to a deadly accident, a traumatized doctor haunted by childhood memories, a desperate man drowning in debt, and someone whose entire world collapses from a single event.

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the series examines how these disparate lives become bound by inescapable fate, weaving a narrative about choices, consequences, and the terrifying randomness of destiny. The show explores whether we can truly escape the chains of karma or if some fates are predetermined.

Star-Studded Cast Lineup

Park Hae Soo (Squid Game’s player 218, Money Heist: Korea’s Berlin) leads the ensemble as a witness to a mysterious accident who makes a deal that sends his life spiraling into darkness. Park has become one of Netflix’s most recognizable Korean actors for roles that blur moral boundaries.

Shin Min Ah (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Our Blues) plays a doctor struggling with childhood trauma who encounters someone from her past she desperately wanted to forget. The role showcases her range beyond romantic dramas.

Lee Hee Jun portrays a debt-ridden man who loses everything to cryptocurrency investments and faces brutal loan sharks willing to do anything to collect.

Kim Sung Kyun (D.P., Divorce Attorney Shin) plays a man who unfairly loses his job and becomes entangled in financial misfortune involving a large sum of money.

Lee Kwang Soo appears as a successful Gangnam doctor whose privileged life unravels overnight, forcing him to confront his true character.

Gong Seung Yeon (First Responders) makes her Netflix debut as a dangerously charming seductress involved with one of the main characters.

Why Karma Stands Out

The series comes from experienced production houses: Moonlight Film previously delivered the hit crime drama Narco-Saints, while Baram Pictures produced acclaimed Netflix originals including Kingdom: Ashin of the North and Castaway Diva. This pedigree suggests high production values and compelling storytelling.

According to Netflix, the series explores how seemingly random events connect lives in devastating ways—a theme that resonates universally while being distinctly Korean in execution.

What Makes This Different From Other K-Drama Thrillers?

Unlike typical revenge dramas or procedural crime series, Karma focuses on interconnected destinies rather than linear narratives. The multi-character structure allows viewers to see how one event ripples through multiple lives, creating a complex web of consequences. The philosophical question—can we escape our karma?—adds existential weight to the thriller elements.

The series also features a cast known for nuanced performances rather than just star power, suggesting character-driven storytelling over spectacle. With filming completed and the series currently in post-production, Netflix has positioned this as a major April 2025 release.
