Kalki 2898 AD Part 2: The Wait Just Got a Firm Deadline

Director Nag Ashwin has confirmed that regular filming on Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 will begin from mid-October 2026, with the team now targeting a 2028 theatrical release. Speaking to Variety India, Ashwin explained that call sheets for all three leads — Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan — are finally locked in. Bachchan and Haasan had already shot individual portions back in February 2026, but the wait was for Prabhas’ schedule to clear up.

“We’re starting regular shooting in mid-October, as we now have call sheets in place for all the artists,” Ashwin said, adding that the goal is to wrap the entire shoot by mid-2027 before moving into post-production. When asked directly about a 2028 release, his answer was simple: “Looks like 2028, certainly.”

Interestingly, Ashwin also clarified there won’t be new story threads bolted on — the sequel continues directly from where the 2024 sci-fi epic left off, expanding the same mythological-dystopian world rather than reinventing it.

There’s also a casting shake-up brewing — Deepika Padukone has reportedly stepped away from the project, with buzz suggesting Sai Pallavi could step into her role. Before this sequel, Prabhas has two other big releases lined up: Fauzi and Spirit.
