Manchester United have confirmed that Juan Mata has left the club upon the expiry of his contract. The attacking midfielder spent eight years with them after signing from Chelsea, and will now move on.
During the last few years, he has totally fallen out of favour and has been limited to only a handful of appearances from the bench. However, he was able to establish himself during the initial years at Old Trafford after moving from London.
Juan Mata leaves Manchester United as a free agent
“From here, from the middle of the pitch at Old Trafford, at night. I’m alone. Actually, this feels like a dream,” he said in a video message.
“I wanted to say thank you very much to all of you for your support over the years and especially during the difficult times that we lived together.
“I will never forget you. Thank you very much. All the best from the bottom of my heart and goodbye.”
Juan Mata leaves Manchester United alongside Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani in a huge squad exodus. And now, the club will invest in the transfer market to overhaul the squad ahead of the new season.
The 34-year-old has no desire to join coaching staff anytime soon, and will continue to play for the coming years. A move to Spain could be on the cards for the veteran, but no club has seemingly registered their interest in him just yet.
