Something has definitely changed for Jonathan Bailey—and it’s not just his role in Wicked! The British heartthrob has been crowned People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2025, marking a historic moment as the first openly gay actor to receive this coveted title. Announced on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, this honor celebrates 40 years of the iconic award.

Jonathan Bailey: Sexiest Man Alive 2025 Quick Facts

The Moment Jonathan Bailey Became History

When Jimmy Fallon unveiled the two magazine covers featuring Jonathan—one shirtless with his beloved dog Benson, another showing him wet and bothered in ocean waves—the Bridgerton star’s reaction was pure joy. He did a little celebratory dance before scooping Fallon into a hug, visibly overwhelmed by the honor.

“It’s the honor of a lifetime,” Jonathan told Fallon, adding with characteristic humor: “And I want to say, Jimmy, thank you so much for turning it down so I could be here.” When asked if people would treat him differently now, he quipped without missing a beat: “I fucking hope so.”

Why This Win Matters

Jonathan Bailey’s selection as Sexiest Man Alive 2025 represents more than just good looks and charm—it’s a cultural milestone. As the first publicly out gay person to receive this honor in the award’s 40-year history (dating back to Mel Gibson in 1985), Jonathan joins an elite roster that includes Brad Pitt, George Clooney, David Beckham, Michael B. Jordan, and Dwayne Johnson.

“I’m sort of thrilled that People magazine has bestowed this honor on someone who can really cherish the value of a sexy man,” Jonathan Bailey said with his trademark wit, acknowledging both the honor and its significance for representation.

From Bridgerton to Wicked: The Bailey Phenomenon

Jonathan Bailey first captured global attention as the swoon-worthy Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s steamy period drama Bridgerton. He remembers the moment his fame truly hit: waking up in 2020 to a radio alarm broadcasting, “Here’s the news at 7. But just before we go, can we talk about Jonathan Bailey?”

His 2024 big-screen debut as Prince Fiyero in Wicked further cemented his status as Hollywood’s magnetic leading man. The role showcases Jonathan Bailey’s ability to blend charm, vocal prowess, and undeniable screen presence—qualities that undoubtedly influenced People’s decision.

He also earned a 2024 Emmy nomination for his powerful performance in Showtime’s Fellow Travelers and recently starred in Jurassic World Rebirth (July 2025). From stage to screen, Jonathan Bailey commands attention wherever he appears.

The Royal Shakespeare Roots

Jonathan Bailey discovered his calling at age 5 when his grandmother took him to see Oliver!. Within two years, he was performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company—an early start that laid the foundation for his theatrical excellence.

Earlier in 2025, Jonathan Bailey starred in Shakespeare’s Richard II in London. “The only thing madder than doing Richard II was to be invited into this,” he told Fallon, referencing the Sexiest Man Alive honor. That blend of classical training with contemporary appeal makes Jonathan Bailey uniquely versatile.

More Than Just a Pretty Face

What sets Jonathan Bailey apart isn’t just physical attractiveness—it’s substance. In 2024, he founded The Shameless Fund, a charity supporting LGBTQ+ organizations working to erase shame within the community.

“There are so many people that want to do brilliant stuff who feel like they can’t,” Jonathan Bailey explained. “And I know the LGBT sector is under immense threat at the moment.” His activism demonstrates that being sexy means using your platform for positive change.

The Covers That Broke the Internet

People magazine delivered two stunning covers for Jonathan Bailey’s feature. One shows him bare-chested and relaxed with Benson, his dog, who became an overnight celebrity himself. The other captures Jonathan Bailey in ocean waves, looking head-on into the camera with intensity that earned the title.

The inside photos reportedly push boundaries further—a departure from previous years of cozy sweaters and conservative styling. Jonathan Bailey brought actual sexiness back to the Sexiest Man Alive brand, with fans celebrating the thirst-trap worthy photoshoot across social media.

“Obviously Absurd” But Absolutely Deserved

Despite the honor, Jonathan Bailey maintains his characteristic humility and humor. “Obviously, I’m incredibly flattered. And it’s completely absurd,” he told People magazine. He admitted he couldn’t keep the secret entirely—he shared the news with Benson, who apparently took it in stride.

When he first learned about the selection earlier in 2025 during his Richard II run, Jonathan Bailey likely never imagined the global reaction that would follow. Social media erupted with approval, many noting that People finally “picked a good one” after years of safer, less exciting choices.

What’s Next for Hollywood’s Sexiest?

With Wicked: For Good (the second part) arriving in theaters soon and his star continuing to rise, Jonathan Bailey shows no signs of slowing down. His combination of classical theater training, blockbuster appeal, and authentic personality creates a rare trifecta in Hollywood.

As for how he’ll embrace his new title? Jonathan Bailey joked that he hopes people treat him differently—but knowing his down-to-earth personality, don’t expect the honor to change this grounded, talented actor who genuinely cherishes what it means to be a “sexy man” in 2025.

The Bottom Line

Jonathan Bailey’s coronation as People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2025 feels both historic and absolutely right. From Bridgerton ballrooms to Wicked fantasy realms, from Shakespeare stages to LGBTQ+ advocacy, he represents a modern masculinity that’s confident, compassionate, and unapologetically authentic.

Congratulations, Jonathan Bailey—you’re not just sexy, you’re making history while looking damn good doing it!
