Although details about their specifications remain unclear, it’s possible that these new Jio phones could be variations of the same model, differentiated by their color options. The appearance of these phones on the BIS certification website coincides with ongoing speculation about the potential launch of a Jio 5G phone later this month.
Reliance has reiterated its intentions to introduce the Reliance Jio 5G smartphone on multiple occasions, aiming to contribute to India’s transition to a 2G-free nation. Recently, a Jio phone was discovered on the CPU benchmarking platform Geekbench, featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 Plus processor. This aligns with Jio’s previously disclosed partnership with the American chipmaker. The Geekbench listing also hints at the possibility of the smartphone housing 4GB of RAM.
Other leaked details concerning the Jio 5G phone suggest a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, a 5,000mAh battery, and a dual rear camera setup with a 13-megapixel configuration. The front-facing camera could potentially be an 8-megapixel sensor for selfies. The company might also include support for at least 18W charging.
Jio has been vocal about its commitment to providing phones at affordable price points to the masses. The Jio 5G phone is anticipated to fall below the INR 10,000 mark and could operate on a custom Jio OS tailored for mobile platforms. Reliance has been collaborating with Google to develop a customized interface layered on top of the Android operating system.
Recently, the company launched two Jio 4G phones priced at INR 999 each. One of these 4G phones was produced in partnership with Indian smartphone manufacturer Karbonn. Jio is also inviting other brands to create cost-effective 4G phones under the Jio branding.
However, these phones primarily belong to the previous generation of feature phones, characterized by physical keypads. Jio also offers a smartphone variant known as the JioPhone Next. The forthcoming Jio 5G phone might even be named JioPhone Next 5G.
Meanwhile, Reliance Jio has yet to unveil dedicated 5G plans for India. It’s expected that the company will discuss its 5G rollout strategy during the AGM 2023, aiming to cover all towns and cities by the end of the year.
