Bayern Munich are close to re-signing Jerome Boateng on a free transfer to cope with their lack of centre-back options. The club parted ways with Boateng in 2021 upon the expiry of his contract, following a decade-long stay for the defender. Since then, he had a brief spell with Lyon and is now training at Säbener Straße.
However, it is doubtful whether he will be played in the first team considering how far past his prime he is. But, Thomas Tuchel tried to sign the German when he was at PSG and could end up turning to the veteran in the absence of Matthijs De Ligt and Kim Min Jae.
Bayern Munich to sign Jerome Boateng on free transfer
Should the medical and formalities be completed in the coming days, Jerome Boateng could be available for Bayern’s game this weekend. He will not travel to Copenhagen in midweek, and could return to team training afterwards.
The hierarchy is quite impressed with the stats the player has shown in training. And given the situation they find themselves in, it could be the best possible solution.
However, the club would also be turning a blind-eye to his off-pitch record considering he was found guilty of domestic abuse against his ex-girlfriend in 2021. The moral issue has attracted criticism and negative publicity for the club. But, they could turn a blind eye in a bid to salvage their season.
