James Rodriguez is close to joining Qatari club Al Rayyan, after the player reportedly flew to the Middle East from Manchester to discuss a move.
He has been informed that he is not a part of Rafa Benitez’s plans at Goodison Park, and as a result, is working to end his spell in England. The Colombian joined Everton last season since Carlo Ancelotti was in charge of the team. He had a good start to life in England, and registered three goals and six assists in his first six games for the Toffees. In the first few months, he was considered a top signing for the team, especially since he was brought in for free.
However, his form dropped afterwards and constant injuries to his calf also hindered consistent appearances for the team. The player was given a chance to earn his place under Benitez in pre-season, but the new manager ultimately decided that Rodriguez was not going to be involved with the team under him.
The 30-year-old is currently earning £200,000 at Goodison Park, and has not featured for the team in the new season. The final nail in the coffin was when Benitez refused to call up Rodriguez in the game against Aston Villa. Everton named 8 out of 9 possible substitutes, and Rodriguez was not a part of the squad.
Porto and Istanbul Basaksehir were interested in the playmaker this summer, but Everton blocked a transfer for him at the time. Al Rayyan now seems like the most probable destination for him since their transfer window is open until September 30.
