J-Lo Is Back Where She Belongs — Office Romance on Netflix Is the Fun Friday Night Film You’ve Been Waiting For

Jennifer Lopez + the writers behind Ted Lasso + a director who did Ticket to Paradise = a rom-com that actually delivers. Here’s everything you need to know before you hit play.

What Is Office Romance About?

Office Romance features Jennifer Lopez as Jackie Cruz, the high-powered CEO of a family-run airline who runs a tight ship — including a strict no-fraternization policy that forbids inter-office relationships. But when her usual corporate lawyer falls ill, a new in-house counsellor named Daniel Blanchflower (Brett Goldstein) takes over a lawsuit and catches the attention of the very single CEO, testing her dedication to her rules, her fear of being hurt again, and her fear of how things might be used against her. whats-on-netflix

It’s a classic “breaking your own rules for love” setup — and it’s executed with a lot more wit than most modern rom-coms manage.

Office Romance: Film Overview

The Origin Story Is As Charming As the Film Itself

The film was conceived by Ted Lasso writers Brett Goldstein and Joe Kelly on a train ride leaving set, when the two bonded over their shared love of old-school rom-coms. They had Jennifer Lopez as the one and only name on their list — and sent her the script with a note saying they couldn’t make it without her. That kind of creative passion shows on screen.

The Cast Is Stacked

Beyond Lopez, Goldstein, and Edward James Olmos as Jackie’s legendary pilot father, the film features Betty Gilpin, Bradley Whitford, Amy Sedaris, Jodie Whittaker, Tony Hale, Mary Wiseman, Tony Plana, and Michelle Hurd — with even the smallest roles landing some of the biggest laughs.

The real MVP, though? Betty Gilpin as Sydney, Jackie’s colleague, who slips between cool third wheel, snide executive, and pregnant punchline with almost a silent-era physicality — her whisper fight with Goldstein is one of the best moments in the entire film. whats-on-netflix

More Comedy Than Romance — And That’s Okay

The film sacrifices sizzle for silliness in places, with many undercuts, awkward sight gags, and silly swerves taking the focus off whether the leads actually spark. However, in a genre register Lopez feels more compelling in, she finally gets to be front and centre using her charms to convince audiences this pairing might be worth rooting for — a step up from recent Netflix duds. whats-on-netflix

Romantic comedies as a genre thrive when the supporting cast is strong, the script is sharp, and the laughs feel earned — Office Romance ticks all three boxes more often than not.

Also — stay through the credits for the hilarious HR sequence that may have as many laughs as the rest of the film combined. Don’t skip it. whats-on-netflix
