What Is the Galloo? Pennywise’s True Identity Uncovered

The Galloo is the name given to the entity that would later be known as Pennywise by the local Shokopiwah tribe. In the episode’s stunning climax, Dick Hallorann uses his Shining abilities to enter the mind of Taniel, revealing an ancient Indigenous legend that changes everything we know about Derry’s monster.

According to the Shokopiwah legend, an evil spirit crash-landed on Earth inside a falling star millions of years ago. When the meteorite broke open upon impact, the evil entity—the Galloo—began roaming the Western Woods. This cosmic horror fed on fear and death, terrorizing the land long before Derry existed.

How the Galloo Was Contained (And How It Escaped)

The tribe’s wisest member carved a dagger from a shard of the meteorite stone to protect their people, keeping the Galloo confined to the Western Wood. For generations, the Shokopiwah lived safely by avoiding the creature’s territory.

But everything changed when white settlers arrived. When settlers ignored the Indigenous warnings and entered the Western Wood, they were eaten by the Galloo, making the entity stronger and powerful enough to hunt beyond its confined area.

Facing this growing threat, Necani—daughter of war chief Sesqui—stole the sacred dagger and ventured into the woods to stop the monster. She created 13 talismans from star shards and buried them around the Western Woods, forming a magical cage to trap the Galloo. This prison exists beneath the infamous Well House on Neibolt Street—the same creepy location from the IT films.

The Military’s Dangerous Discovery

Episode 4 ends with a horrifying realization: Hallorann has led General Frank directly to Pennywise’s lair through the Well House, putting everyone in Derry in unimaginable danger. The military’s attempt to weaponize this ancient evil promises catastrophic consequences in upcoming episodes.

Marge’s Gruesome Body Horror Scene

Meanwhile, Pennywise continued his reign of terror with one of the series’ most disturbing moments yet. Marge hallucinated that her eyes morphed into long, pulsating stalks resembling parasitic flatworms from biology class, leading her to gouge at her own eyes in panic. When students discovered the scene, Lilly appeared to be the attacker—further isolating the vulnerable teen.

FAQs

Is the Galloo story from Stephen King’s original IT novel?

The Shokopiwah tribe and Indigenous lore were created specifically for Andy Muschietti’s film series and first appeared in IT: Chapter Two—they’re not in King’s original 1986 novel. However, the concept of an ancient cosmic entity arriving via meteorite does align with King’s broader vision, though the show expands and reimagines the mythology significantly.

Why is the house on Neibolt Street so important in IT: Welcome to Derry?

The Well House serves as a gateway to the monster’s underground lair, directly connected to where the 13 meteorite shard talismans were buried to contain the Galloo. It’s not just a creepy abandoned house—it’s literally the threshold of Pennywise’s prison. This is why the location has been central to the IT story across all adaptations, as it represents the physical entrance to the entity’s domain beneath Derry.
