In recent developments that could reshape Indian football, ISL club owners have formally pushed back against the All India Football Federation (AIFF) regarding the recent commercial rights tender. Expressing dissatisfaction with how the tender process was handled, the clubs are now seeking a formal role in decision-making to protect their long-term investments in the Indian Super League.
The Core of the Dispute
The conflict revolves around the AIFF’s decision to award a 15+5-year commercial rights contract for the ISL. While the federation received bids—with a London-based company reportedly leading the race with an offer of approximately ₹2,130 crore over 20 years—the ISL club owners felt sidelined.
In a joint letter addressed to the AIFF, signed by 13 of the 14 club owners, the stakeholders emphasized that decisions impacting the Indian Super League’s long-term commercial and governance framework cannot be treated as routine operational matters. Although the AIFF recently formed an ISL Governing Council and requested clubs to nominate representatives, the franchise owners have proposed an alternative structure. They have called for the formation of a “working committee” at the ownership and leadership level.
