Is Real Madrid making the same mistake again with Sergio Ramos just like Cristiano Ronaldo?

It seems Real Madrid president Florentino Perez hasn’t learned from his past mistakes. Real Madrid let go of their record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018 without a proper backup, and everyone know what a disastrous move it was! Ronaldo is still missed by Real Madrid at the front of the goal. Although Benzema has upped his game, there isn’t any player to score 40-50 goals each season.

Real Madrid is again making the same mistake with their captain Sergio Ramos this time. Even though they have signed David Alaba on a free transfer who can slot in Ramos’ position, it would be a near-impossible task to replicate Sergio Ramos’ success in the Real Madrid backline.

It has now come to light that Sergio Ramos wanted to accept Real Madrid’s offer of a one-year contract extension with a salary reduction. But, Real Madrid had withdrawn the offer in March without an ultimatum. It is regrettable to see how a club cannot extend its contract offer to one of its legendary captains and defenders.

Ramos explained during his farewell press conference on Thursday: “Many things have happened, circumstances that occur in life. The first thing I’d like to say is that I’ve never wanted to leave Real Madrid, I’ve always wanted to stay,”

“To give details and to be brief, I go back to the lockdown LaLiga title, which we won and celebrated. After that, the club offered me the opportunity to extend my contract, but because of COVID it was put on the back burner.”

“In the last few months, the club made me a one-year offer with a salary reduction. Money was never a problem; the president knew that I’d made clear that it wasn’t an economic issue. It was a problem in terms of years; they offered me one year and I wanted two, it was stability for my family.”

“In the last conversations I said that I accepted and they told me that there was no longer an offer. I was told that even though I had agreed to the last offer that was on the table, I was told that it had an expiry date and I hadn’t heard about it.”

Sergio Ramos is often called Mr 92:48 because of his goal in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in the dying minutes, which eventually helped them get their hands on the La Decima. He wrote history on that day and will forever be remembered by all Real Madrid fans for that exact moment. Ramos has given a million moments to remember his Real Madrid days.

It’s really sad to see a club legend leave like this. Ramos’ contribution to Real Madrid has been invaluable. Even if Ramos doesn’t get to play each and every game in the season, he would have surely made an impact on the mentality of the other players. The winning mentality runs in his veins and all the players would have benefitted from him as well. Real Madrid are once again walking on the same rope as they did in 2018.
