iPhone 17e Might Not Happen — Here’s Why Apple Could Be Skipping It

Apple’s approach to affordable iPhones has always been unpredictable. Now, the company seems to be adding more mystery. After launching the iPhone 16e earlier this year as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 16 lineup, many expected a follow-up—the iPhone 17e—in 2025.

But new reports suggest Apple may skip the 17e entirely. This could delay its budget strategy, echoing the irregular rollout of the iPhone SE series.

iPhone 17e Might Not Happen — Here’s Why Apple Could Be Skipping It

What Happened to the iPhone 17e?

The iPhone 16e debuted in early 2024 at a compelling $599 in the U.S. It blended current-gen specs with a value-first approach. Many viewed it as the spiritual successor to the iPhone SE. But unlike the SE’s predictable naming and schedule, the 16e was a unique experiment.

However, a new report from The Information lists Apple’s iPhone roadmap for the next few years—and there’s no sign of an iPhone 17e in 2025. Instead, it notes that the iPhone 18e is expected in spring 2027, effectively skipping the 17e generation altogether.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also echoed the uncertainty, stating that Apple hasn’t finalized plans for a 17e, adding to growing speculation that the model may never see the light of day.

Why Apple Might Skip the iPhone 17e

Several reasons could explain Apple’s reluctance to release a 17e next year:

1. SE-Like Cadence

Apple has historically released iPhone SE models every 2–3 years, not annually. The 16e may be following that same schedule, suggesting that “e” devices will be occasional budget offerings rather than annual entries.

2. Shifting Strategy with iPhone 17 Air

Leaks surrounding the upcoming iPhone 17 Air indicate that Apple may be reshuffling its lineup. The Air is expected to be thinner, possibly more premium, and may blur the line between the standard and Pro models with 12GB of RAM—traditionally a Pro-only spec.

If the iPhone 17 Air essentially serves as the mid-tier or entry-level “upgrade”, Apple may see no need for a separate 17e model in the short term.

3. Supply Chain and AI Considerations

Apple’s ongoing push into Apple Intelligence (AI) features demands certain minimum specs—most notably, at least 8GB of RAM. Budget models often cut corners on specs to keep costs down. Apple might delay or skip “e” models until it can offer AI-capable hardware at a lower price point without compromising performance.

When to Expect the Next Budget iPhone

If the reports are accurate, Apple may not launch another affordable “e” series device until spring 2027, with the iPhone 18e taking the baton from the 16e. This timeline aligns more closely with the SE release cycle, indicating Apple may view the “e” line as a budget refresh every few years rather than a permanent fixture in the annual lineup.

The “e” Line Is Not Dead—Just on Ice

While the iPhone 17e appears increasingly unlikely, that doesn’t mean Apple is abandoning affordable phones altogether. Instead, it may be strategically spacing out its budget offerings to prevent market saturation, protect premium sales, and ensure that low-cost devices meet the performance standards required for Apple’s growing ecosystem of AI-driven features.

So, if you’re hoping for an affordable iPhone in 2025, you may need to wait—or turn your attention to the possibly thinner, better-equipped iPhone 17 Air.

FAQs

Will Apple release the iPhone 17e?

As of now, it’s looking unlikely. Reports indicate no 17e is planned, with the next budget model expected to be the iPhone 18e in 2027.

What happened to the iPhone SE?

The iPhone SE hasn’t been officially discontinued, but the 16e appears to have replaced it for now.
