According to a new note, from Hong Kong-based investment bank Haitong recently noted that generally agrees with this rumor and goes on to say the new “iPhone 17 Air,” will be about 6mm thick compared to older versions. If this happened, it would push the iPhone into record-thin territory, beating the current slimmest title holder — 6.9mm from the side of an iPhone 6.

iPhone 17 Air Could Be Apple’s Thinnest iPhone Yet at 6mm, Launch Expected in 2025

If these reports are correct, the iPhone 17 Air would also be much thicker than the standard and Pro models of the iPhone 16, which is 7.8mm (standard) and 8.25mm (Pro and Pro Max). Though some may have wished for a smaller device, there are limitations to how small the battery and parts can shrink. At 6mm, the iPhone 17 Air would still be impressively light and slim compared to recent iPhones.

For comparison, previous iPhone models like the iPhone 6 held the title of the thinnest at 6.9mm, while the iPhone 7 was slightly thicker at 7.1mm. Devices such as the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro Max are measured at around 7.4mm to 7.65mm thick, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max is around 8.25mm.  The iPhone 17 Air would be Apple’s thinnest iPhone, but not the company’s thinnest product. Measuring just 5.1mm thick, the record-holder is the 13-inch 2024 iPad Pro, which has now become just ahead of its closest competitor: the last iPod Nano at a thickness of 5.4mm.

There have been multiple reports regarding the design and specifications of the iPhone 17 Air, as it may include a single 48MP rear camera along with a 24MP front-facing camera coupled to a large 6.6-inch display. The phone will reportedly carry an A19 chip by Apple, as well as up to 8GB of RAM and Face ID within an aluminum case. These details could change as we get closer to the device’s eventual September 2025 launch.
