Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge is the company’s slimmest phone in years, featuring a 3,900mAh battery. While that might seem modest in 2025, even mid-rangers now boast 6,000mAh batteries, so there’s a chance the upcoming Apple iPhone 17 Air might manage an even more shocking figure.

iPhone 17 Air rumored to be 5.5mm thin with a 2,800mAh battery; launches alongside iPhone 17 Pro in late 2025

As per a new report on Naver quoting Apple’s supply chain, the iPhone 17 Air will be very thin, measuring at only 5.5mm. This ultra-svelte figure does line up with whispers of a name which could share ‘Air’ branding, but the potential downside is that the battery, by 2025 smartphone standards, is small at 2,800mAh. For context, even the first Galaxy Z Flip, which appeared five years ago in foldable form, featured a 3,300mAh battery. And somehow Samsung has squeezed a reasonable 3,900mAh battery inside the slender body of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.

But there is an upside. The leak implies Apple may use high-density battery tech to increase the iPhone 17 Air’s capacity by 15-20%. This could mean improved battery life despite a smaller cell size, but real-world performance is something that will have to be tested once the phone ships. Also, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to weigh only 145 grams, which will make it one of the lightest smartphones in the segment.

Apart from the battery, iPhone 17 Air is said to feature a 6.6-inch Dynamic Island display and a new Camera Control button, the report had said. Apple is likely to bring a 120Hz refresh rate as standard across all iPhone 17 models.

The phone is expected to run on Apple’s A19 chip, support WiFi 7, and come with a more durable display glass. Pricing for the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be lower than the iPhone 17 Pro, which starts at $999. The entire iPhone 17 lineup, including the Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, is expected to launch between September and October 2025.
