Apple is said to be planning to make the bezels, on the iPhone 16 series compared to the iPhone 15 which is gaining momentum for the second time. Interestingly, the technology rumored to be used for this purpose has a name.
More About the iPhone 16 Series Thinner Bezels
As per reports from The Elec, the iPhone 16 is expected to have bezels due to a technology called ‘Border Reduction Structure.’ To grasp how Apple plans to achieve this, it’s essential to look into how a bezel is constructed, which involves positioning circuits and bending wiring downward.
Trimming down a display bezel to levels poses a lot of technical challenges and difficulties, with reports mentioning that no company has successfully mass-produced an iPhone OLED yield that meets Apple’s standards yet. In an attempt to tackle these challenges, LG is said to be broadening its Display Driver IC (DDI) supply chain by partnering with Taiwan’s Novatech alongside its supplier, LX Semicon.
The aim of this collaboration among the three companies is to improve quality while cutting costs. Since LG’s production capacity for iPhone OLED screens is more than half of Samsung’s capacity it makes sense for the Korean manufacturer to explore cost-saving measures due to economies of scale.
This year, it is expected that Samsung will be supplying OLED panels, for all models, in the iPhone 16 series, with LG set to provide displays for the ‘Pro’ variants. However, it remains uncertain whether the ‘Border Reduction Structure’ technology will be implemented across all four models or restricted to the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.
There is hope that Apple will prioritize its less expensive models, as many consumers are unwilling to spend exorbitant amounts on higher-tier handsets but still desire differentiation in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
