Interest is rising steadily in the iPhone 16 series as we come into Apple’s annual fall event in September. The USPSTF report alluded to a release date of September 10. Apple will produce its top-tier iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max in India for the first time, following production of last year’s launched-with-the-iPhone-15 assembly line. This also follows Apple’s strategy to shift some of its production out from China in a somewhat attempt to avoid the rising tension between US and Chinese trade.
Price Cut For iPhone 16 Pro & 16 Pro Max
Under Modi, India has been wooing Apple to set up production units in the country as part of a broader push by his administration to create more manufacturing jobs in consumer electronics. For this reason, Apple has chosen to manufacture its new top-tier iPhones in India.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Foxconn Technology Group — the longtime manufacturing partner for Apple — will begin assembling iPhone 16 Pro models at its factory situated in Tamil Nadu. It will start up after the new production line kicks in, and Foxconn is already training workers by thousands. More of its Indian partners, including Pegatron and the Tata Group might also be roped in to assemble these high-end iPhones at a later stage along with Foxconn.
By the way, iPhones 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max can be worth even cheaper by as much as ten percent following local assembly. As of now, the iPhone 15 Pro model is imported and therefore commands higher pricing due to the import duties involved. Despite this, Gurman does warn that component prices and local taxes could still price the iPhone 16 Pro models higher than in other markets.
For the iPhone 16, you can expect Apple Intelligence to make its debut on a non-Pro model and for prices, assuming they do not increase as widely speculated last year. If we convert the above price to INR then after a 10% price cut iPhone 16 Pro will cost you ₹1,20,500 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max at ₹1,44,000.
However, as demand for top-end models in India is low these handsets are largely expected to be exported to the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Bloomberg’s report reveals that Apple assembled iPhones worth $14 billion in India for the fiscal year ending March 2024, accounting for about 14% of its global output. With the addition of the iPhone 16 Pro models, Apple aims to increase the share of Indian-produced units to 25% over the next 3 to 4 years, fulfilling local demand by year-end.
