iPhone 14 tipped to offer 2TB of storage

Apple could give the iPhone 14 a whopping 2TB of storage, double that of the maximum 1TB of onboard storage the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max can be equipped with.

With the ‌iPhone 14‌ next year, Apple is settings its eyes on making its Pro iPhones even more “Pro” by offering a 2TB option, according to a sketchy rumor from Chinese site MyDrivers. The rumor, which should be viewed with a considerable amount of skepticism, claims that Apple will adopt QLC flash storage for next year’s ‌iPhone‌ and that thanks to the newer storage technology, it will increase capacity to 2TB.

DigiTimes agrees wit the rumor that Apple is looking to switch to “cost-effective QLC NAND flash solutions,” but stops short of repeating the 2TB claim. MyDrivers doesn’t provide an explanation as to why Apple would be increasing capacities so dramatically, other than the fact that QLC flash storage is cheaper than what it uses now. Still, Apple could probably justify the move with the support for ProRes video files on the Pro models that will chew through internal storage once enabled.

Another part of the rumor mentioned something about the switch to a new type of flash storage, which could theoretically explain the massive storage capacity. Called QLC or quad-level cell, this specific technology is known for improving performance and capacity at a lower cost.

Apple doesn’t regularly offer new storage configurations, and when it does, as evident this year by new camera features, it has a reason in mind. Next year’s ‌iPhone 14‌ is expected to focus more heavily on a complete redesign that removes the notch rather than concentrate on camera upgrades. Regardless, camera improvements are a given for every new ‌iPhone‌. Still, there’s no indication to think that the ‌iPhone 14‌ will expand camera capabilities to the extent that a new 2TB storage configuration is practically warranted.
