While Meteor Lake shakes things up for laptops this year, Intel has three product families in the works for mainstream and HEDT desktops: Raptor Lake-S Refresh, Arrow Lake-S, and Sapphire Rapids Xeon W Refresh. The most recent information comes from a leaker at Bilibili, Enthusiast Citizen, who has information regarding three desktop product families releasing between 2023 and 2024.
The most noticeable will be the Raptor Lake-S Refresh family, which will be labelled under the 14th Gen “Core” family. Intel Raptor Lake-S Refresh desktop CPUs are projected to have faster clock speeds, higher power consumption, and improved support for higher-frequency memory. These CPUs are slated to hit the market in October of this year.
Along with the Intel Raptor Lake-S Refresh “K” Unlocked SKUs, the company will also release Non-K parts between November and December.
According to sources, Intel has added a new SKU that implements 8 P-Core and 12 E-Core combinations, however it is unclear whether such SKU will be available for purchase.
However, upgrading the Core i7 CPU portfolio to include additional E-Cores will be an intriguing option. All CPUs will be backwards compatible with existing 600 and 700 series motherboards with LGA 1700/1800 sockets.
The proper desktop upgrade is not scheduled until late 2024 or early 2025. The Intel Arrow Lake-S CPUs will represent a significant architectural shift, using the latest P-Core and E-Core architectures. The new CPUs will be LGA 1851 socket compatible, but will maintain the 8 P-Core and 16 E-Core architectures.
There are contradicting rumours, with some pointing to only 6+8 Arrow Lake-S combinations and others referring to up to 40 core configurations, but nothing is set in stone until Intel confirms it. They will be based on TSMC’s 3nm process node, but we don’t know if it is for the entire chip or a specific tile because Arrow Lake CPUs are multi-tiled.
Finally, the Intel HEDT update will include the Xeon W-2500 and Xeon W-3500 series, which will replace the existing Xeon W-2400 and Xeon W-3500 series. These Sapphire Rapids Xeon-W update CPUs will work with existing W790 motherboards.
Intel will release an improved Emerald Rapids server design, however it is unclear whether the same design will arrive with the revised Sapphire Rapids CPUs. On the same platforms, 4th and 5th generation Xeon CPUs are both interoperable.
