Intel announces Xe HPG Gaming GPU, coming in 2021

During Architecture Day 2020, Intel announces their Xe HPG GPU especially for the gaming community and it will the market next year i.e. 2021. At the event, Raja Koduri, the senior vice president and chief architect of Intel’s discrete graphics division has stated that Intel has not forgotten the gaming community and for them, they have revealed their first ever discrete GPU called as Intel Xe HPG which is specially designed for gaming.

It will feature a single tile of HPG architecture with GDDR6 memory. Intel has yet not confirmed the tile count in the presentation but during Q&A with Raja Kokuri, he had provided a big hint that confirms the specs.

Back in 2018, Intel formerly had plans for a single graphics architecture with two micro-architectures. A couple of years later, the number of microarchitectures has doubled to four. While we are not certain whether Xe HP and HPG will have the same EU count per tile and if it is similar then some quick estimations can be done as well.

Xe HP with a single tile has 512 EUs which estimated roughly to have 4096 cores. If the core count remains the same then it will likely have 4096 cores with GDDR6 memory. The following year if Intel sets the prices right then this could hit hard the gaming market and can heavily impact AMD and Nvidia. By just 1500 MHz, and with 512 EUs, the Xe HPG GPU would be capable to give the output of 12.2 TFLOPs of FP32 Compute.

During the event, Intel has demonstrated 1-tile, 2-tile, and 4-tile variants of Xe HP running a compute workload, with nearly perfect scaling based on the number of tiles. This test used early drivers, running at non-final clocks of 1300 MHz and it was able to deliver 10.6 TFLOPS (FP32) with a single tile and up to 42.3 TFLOPS with a 4-tile implementation.

Though we have received a little knowledge for now about the Xe HPG GPU, we are likely to be sure that it will be on par with Nvidia’s rumored 3080Ti GPU. We speculate that it can very easily handle 4K gaming.
