India’s Netflix Obsession: The Originals Everyone Streamed in 2026

Netflix just dropped its Engagement Report for the first half of 2026, and India had its strongest viewing half yet. While the licensed hit “Dhurandhar” pulled in a massive 37 million views, Netflix’s own India-made Originals told an equally compelling story. Here’s a look at the movies and series that defined the year so far.

India’s Netflix Obsession: Numbers at a Glance

Breaking Down Each Title

Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web This Hindi thriller led by Emraan Hashmi became Netflix India’s most-watched Original series by a wide margin, racking up 87 million hours of viewing. It even made history as the first Indian series to hit No. 1 on Netflix’s global weekly Top 10 Non-English list. The story follows customs agents at India’s busiest airport hunting down an international smuggling ring — and despite the strong numbers, a second season hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Accused This psychological drama arrived with a bold premise: a queer gynecologist in London faces a misconduct investigation that threatens both her career and her marriage. Led by acclaimed actress Konkona Sen Sharma, the film’s high-concept story and strong performances helped it become one of the platform’s biggest movie hits of the year.

Made in Korea Capitalizing on India’s growing love for K-dramas, this cross-over film blends Tamil and Korean dialogue to tell the story of a young South Indian woman finding independence while living in Seoul. With “Squid Game” star Park Hye-jin playing her mentor, the film became a fast favorite among audiences bridging both cultures.

Maamla Legal Hai, Season 2 This courtroom comedy returned with a speedy turnaround, following Advocate Tyagi’s promotion to judge as he oversees a colorful cast of lawyers and clients. Impressively, Season 2 is outperforming Season 1 in hours-watched pace, though there’s no confirmation yet on a third season.

Maa Behen While it didn’t top the viewership charts, this Hindi crime comedy earned its spot through sheer quality, boasting strong critical scores. Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit stars as a woman with a scandalous past turning to her daughters for help hiding a very inconvenient body.

Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa Netflix’s newest reality format dropped controversial celebrities into a mock jail setting to rehabilitate their public images. Despite launching in late June, it quickly landed on the global weekly Top 10 list, hinting it could end up as one of the platform’s biggest India releases by year’s end.

Netflix’s original content strategy has reshaped how audiences worldwide discover regional stories, turning streaming into a major driver of global entertainment consumption — you can read more about the platform’s history on Wikipedia.
