The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia has reached its final day at the iconic Kennington Oval in London. As the excitement builds up, fans are eagerly anticipating whether India can stage a remarkable comeback and clinch the prestigious title. However, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik recently shared his concerns, expressing doubts about India’s chances of victory.

Let’s have a look into the reasons behind Karthik’s skepticism and analyze India’s uphill battle on the final day of the WTC final: WTC Final

  • Challenging Pitch Conditions: Karthik emphasizes that the challenging pitch conditions at The Oval pose a significant hurdle for India. With the ball keeping low and exhibiting unpredictable behavior, batsmen are finding it difficult to settle in and score big. The lower bounce increases the risk of LBW and bowled dismissals, further complicating India’s task.
  • The Mammoth Target: Australia, led by Pat Cummins, has set an imposing target of 444 runs for India to chase. While India displayed resilience on Day 4, finishing at 164 for three, the task ahead remains herculean. Breaking the record for the highest-successful chase in Test history at the venue is a formidable challenge that demands exceptional performance from the Indian batsmen.
  • History of Successful Chases on Day 5: Looking at historical precedents, India faces an uphill battle in their pursuit of victory. The record for the most runs scored on Day 5 to win a Test match is held by Australia, who achieved a 404-run target against England in 1948. West Indies’ 342-run chase against England at Lord’s in 1984 stands as the second-highest successful chase on the final day. India’s own record of the third-highest chase, 328 runs against Australia at the Gabba in 2021, offers a glimmer of hope but remains an exceptional occurrence.
  • Dinesh Karthik’s Concerns: Karthik’s analysis suggests that India’s chances of winning the WTC final seem slim. He believes that chasing anything above 350 on this Oval track, especially in the fourth innings, would be significantly challenging. Karthik points out that India is paying the price for their performance on the first day, where Australia’s batsmen laid a strong foundation, setting a substantial first-innings total of 469 runs.
