Indian Railways Arms Ticket Checkers With Body Cameras: Here’s Why

Ticket checking on Indian trains is getting a tech upgrade. Indian Railways is rolling out body cameras for Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs), with the Prayagraj–New Delhi route among the services included in the expanding initiative aimed at recording every ticket-checking interaction on board.

The move comes as Indian Railways continues modernizing its operations, following recent pushes into AI-based surveillance, smart stations, and digital ticketing systems.

Why Indian Railways Is Making This Move

The core idea behind the rollout is simple: protect both passengers and staff by creating a reliable record of what actually happens during ticket checks. TTEs have increasingly faced disputes on board, ranging from heated arguments to, in some reported cases, false complaints of misconduct filed against them. A verified video and audio record gives railway authorities clear evidence to resolve such disputes fairly, rather than relying on conflicting accounts after the fact.

The cameras being deployed are lightweight and designed for long shifts, with battery life stretching to around 20 hours so recording doesn’t cut out mid-journey. Night vision functionality also ensures footage remains usable during overnight travel, which is common on long-distance routes.

Railway officials have said that if the pilot phase proves successful, the technology could eventually be extended system-wide across Indian Railways, following a similar path to how CCTV surveillance and AI-based monitoring have been progressively rolled out at stations and on locomotives in recent years, part of the broader push toward rail transport modernization happening globally.

For passengers, the expectation is straightforward: clearer accountability on both sides during ticket checks, and fewer disputes that go unresolved due to a lack of evidence.
