Indian Football Team to Play Two Teams in Dushanbe During FIFA International Window

The Indian football team’s packed summer schedule has grown even busier, with the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) informing clubs that India will participate in two friendlies in Tajikistan on June 6 and June 9. The Indian football team will play Palestine and Tajikistan in the FIFA June International Window, with both friendlies set to be played in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

The Indian team may directly travel to Tajikistan for this friendly tour from the UK after participating in the Unity Cup 2026 which is scheduled to end on 31 May. The back-to-back assignments reflect the AIFF’s commitment to maximising every available international window as head coach Khalid Jamil embarks on rebuilding the national team.

A Pivotal Summer for Indian Football

Indian football team is entering what many fans would describe as a new phase, perhaps even a rebirth. After the disappointment of failing to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup, it most certainly was the end of an old cycle, and now the focus shifts towards building for the future. India, currently ranked 136th in the FIFA rankings, will face much higher-ranked sides in Palestine (95th) and Tajikistan (103rd). Competing against teams at that level will provide a clear benchmark for India and offer the players a chance to grow through high-quality international experience.

The Unity Cup Comes First

Before the Tajikistan friendlies, India will also compete in the Unity Cup 2026 in the UK against Nigeria, Jamaica and Zimbabwe. India will return to English soil after 24 years as the Blue Tigers gear up for their maiden appearance in the Unity Cup, scheduled to be held at The Valley in Southeast London from May 27 to May 31. 

Indian senior men’s national team head coach Khalid Jamil has officially announced a 28-member preliminary squad for the upcoming Unity Cup 2026, set to take place in London. Following the conclusion of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season, the squad will convene in Bengaluru for a brief training camp. This camp is essential for Jamil to evaluate the players’ performances before finalising the 23-member squad that will travel to London on May 24.

Khalid Jamil’s Philosophy and Approach

In August 2025, he was appointed as the head coach of the India national team. He became the first Indian to be appointed head coach of the national team in 13 years, succeeding Savio Medeira, whose tenure ended in 2012. On 13 August 2025, he signed a two-year contract, with an option to extend for another year.

Jamil expressed his optimism about the summer programme, stating: “The Unity Cup will be the perfect opportunity for us to prepare for the official tournaments like the SAFF Championship later this year. We need to utilise every available FIFA International Window to prepare for the tournaments we have up ahead.” He has made a name for himself in Indian football as a pragmatic tactician, one who builds teams that are difficult to break down and highly efficient on the counter. He famously led Aizawl FC to a historic I-League title in 2017 and then enjoyed impressive stints in the ISL, most notably taking NorthEast United FC to the playoffs in the 2020-21 season.

Why These Friendlies Matter

Ideally, the same group of players selected by Khalid Jamil for the Unity Cup should continue together into these friendlies to ensure stability and begin the rebuilding process properly. This should also help the Indian side work better and build a chemistry among the team as these friendlies will take place in early June just after the Unity Cup 2026. India’s participation comes at a crucial time for the national team after failing to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia. The team has since struggled to secure high-quality international fixtures.

The new tournament, announced by Gianni Infantino during the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur last year, is expected to be held later in 2026 and will feature national teams from Southeast Asia along with invited nations. The FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to provide India with competitive matches during the September-October international window.
