This decade has been a great one for sports in India, as we saw the rise of many youngsters, the rise of the Indian Football Team, a new cricket team and also, many sporting clubs in various sports.
So let’s have a look at the club of the decade in various sporting events in India.
MUMBAI INDIANS – CRICKET
Mumbai Indians, the most successful and consistent team in the Indian Premier League, with the franchise winning seven titles from the 14 tournaments it participated in the last decade, two of which are of Champions League Twenty20 which has now come at the defunct, rest are the Indian Premier League (IPL). But the club reached its height of success in its five IPL titles in a span of eight-year.
Starting with 2013 when Rohit Sharma took over MI as a captain midway through the season, and most interestingly, MI won the title every alternative year even till the end of the decade when they broke the record by winning the 2020 IPL. Also, MI’s contribution in shaping the talents, including Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Chahar, and many more, is huge. Thus it is perfect to call MI the Club of the Decade.
PATNA PIRATES – KABADDI
The Patna Pirates has been the most successful franchise in Pro Kabaddi league’s brief history with bagging three titles in successive seasons between 2016 to 2017, after making it to the semi-finals in the previous two years. During the club’s seven seasons, the team has recorded the second-most wins with 70 and has a win percentage of 52.23 from 134 matches
BENGALURU FC – FOOTBALL
Ever since the inception of Bengaluru FC in Indian football, it has been India’s leading club, with two I-League titles, two Federation Cups, in addition to one ISL title and one Super Cup title. They deserve to be the most successful football team of the decade.
Their amazing performance in the AFC Cup final in 2016 still remains the best performance by an Indian Club on the continental stage in recent times. Also, the club has instilled very high standards off and on the fields, be it the kind of professionalism they have inculcated in their footballers or the way in which they have provided their coaches with time and room to build winning units.
Not only this, but the club’s contribution in the grassroots and junior level is also highly appreciable as the club’s grassroots development program last July was decorated with a two-star academy status by the Asian Football Confederation, making it the only professional club in India to gain the recognition.
Indian Football Clubs produced some of the best football talents of the country. Such clubs include the famous Mohun Bagan Club, East Bengal Club, Mahindra United, Salgoacar Club and JCT Mills Club, which have the origin from colonial era.
