According to a buzz shared by Movies Singapore, Shankar has informed Lyca Productions that he is moving on to Velpari and has given them an ultimatum of two to three months to decide whether they want to finish and release Indian 3. If no decision is made within that period, he will proceed with Velpari, complete all three parts, and will not return to finish the Indian franchise.

That’s a massive statement. Shankar is essentially telling one of Tamil cinema’s biggest production houses — it’s now or never.

How Did It Come to This?

The roots of this tension go back further than most fans realise. When the shoot of Indian 2 was halted earlier, Shankar began working on Ram Charan’s Game Changer. Lyca Productions later requested him to complete the remaining portions of Indian 2, leading him to work on both films simultaneously — with some portions of Indian 2 reportedly shot by his assistant director team and directors like Arivazhagan.

Both films ultimately disappointed at the box office. Now, rather than risk a repeat, Shankar reportedly wants to avoid balancing multiple projects and instead focus entirely on Velpari, which is planned on a massive scale using the latest technology.

Indian 2 ends with a cliffhanger and includes a post-credit scene exploring the past of Senapathy’s father, with Kajal Aggarwal playing a pivotal role — clearly hinting at a third film. The franchise setup is there. Whether it ever makes it to screens now depends entirely on Lyca’s next move.

It’s worth remembering that the original Indian (1996) on Wikipedia was a landmark vigilante action film that made Kamal Haasan a pan-India icon — making a potential shelving of the third chapter genuinely heartbreaking for those who grew up with Senapathy.
