India tour of South Africa: Virat Kohli addresses the captaincy issue, relationship with Rohit and his availability in ODI

Indian skipper Virat Kohli had arranged for a virtual press conference, from Mumbai before the team’s departure to South Africa. He verified that he will be in the Indian squad for the ODI series and before Rohit Sharma replaced him as a captain, the issue was thoroughly discussed with him.

1) Did he leave the ODI captaincy or was he asked to leave?

He said that the 5 official selection committee members had declared that they won’t be continuing with Kohli to which he replied “Okay Fine”

He then communicated with BCCI that he will be continuing as a Test and ODI caption unless the official members choose someone else for the responsibility. The final decision taken by BCCI in which Virat Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma. He concluded by confirming that his communication with the BCCI has always been very clear.

2) Is all okay between him and Rohit Sharma?

He clarified that there is no personal war with Rohit Sharma.

“Rohit is a very good and tactical captain both for India and IPL. Both Head coach Rahul Dravid and Rohit will have my full support. There’s no problem between me and Rohit and I am tired of clarification. My motive is always to perform the best and take Indian cricket to the next heights. I wish him a speedy recovery for the South Africa series.”

3) Will he play in ODI’s in South Africa?

Virat Kohli cleared the rumour of him not playing for ODIs against South Africa that has been on air for a while. He said that the sources were rubbish with lies written in their articles. he said that he is always available he had no communication with BCCI about this matter.

“I was attending some events or something which was absolutely not true either. All these people who are writing these things and their sources to be they are absolutely not credible.”

Kohli Admitted that the speculations happening outside are baseless.

“Lot of things that happen outside are not ideal but you have to do things in your control. I am mentally prepared and excited to do well in South Africa.”
