As India marks its 76th anniversary of independence, a survey of its citizens reveals a sense of confidence about the country’s prospects. According to a LocalCircles study performed across 379 districts in the country, seven out of ten Indians feel the country’s standing in the global arena will improve in the next years.
Furthermore, slightly more than half of those polled (55%), believe that most people will experience growth and prosperity by 2027, when the country will be 80. However, 41% of residents polled believe that progress and prosperity will benefit ‘just a few’.
According to an Oxfam India research, the wealth gap increased in 2022, with just 5% of the citizens possessing more than 60% of the country’s wealth while the lowest 50% held only 3%.
Regarding the employment dilemma that India is experiencing, a majority of the respondents – a majority at 44% – are of the belief that the country will create just some new employment but many small enterprises.
In another series of questions, 40% of respondents responded that creating enough employment and livelihood opportunities will be the most difficult problem over the next four years.
The optimism is even lower when it comes to corruption and bribery. Only 37% believe the situation would improve with less corruption, while 38% believe it will remain the same. Optimism is also poor in terms of societal stability. Only 45% expect social stability to improve in four years, while 31% expect it to remain same. Furthermore, 24% believe it will worsen.
