India Just Joined the Hydrogen Train Club — And It’s the World’s Biggest One

Green mobility just got a major Indian upgrade. PM Modi flagged off the country’s first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, and it isn’t just a symbolic first — it’s reportedly the largest-capacity hydrogen train running anywhere in the world.

Where Is India’s First Hydrogen Train Running?

The train was launched from Jind, Haryana, and will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route. Speaking at the launch, PM Modi called it a step toward a self-reliant India and sustainable development, framing the milestone as part of the country’s broader clean-energy push.

What Makes This Train Special?

Unlike smaller hydrogen trainsets running elsewhere in the world, India’s version is a 10-coach formation capable of carrying nearly 2,600 passengers, powered by a 3,200-horsepower propulsion system — making it, according to officials, the largest-capacity hydrogen train currently in operation globally.

How Does It Fit India’s Climate Goals?

Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction, releasing only water vapor as a byproduct — making it a genuinely clean alternative to diesel-based traction. The launch supports Indian Railways’ broader push toward net zero emissions and positions the country among a small group of nations actively deploying hydrogen rail technology, even as the underlying technology remains in its early, developing stages globally.
