  • India’s best-ever FIFA ranking was 94th, achieved in 1996. The country has rarely made it past the top 100 countries in recent years.
  • The new ranking system called ‘SUM’ adds or subtracts points won or lost after a game to or from the previous points total. It takes into account the relative strength of the two opponents, with teams higher in the rankings expected to fare better against teams lower in the rankings.
  • India’s recent climb in the rankings is a positive sign for the future of football in the country, which has been steadily improving in recent years. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been working to promote the sport and develop young talent through grassroots initiatives.
  • The Indian men’s team is scheduled to participate in a host of international tournaments in the lead up to the AFC Asian Cup 2024 in Qatar. The Merdeka Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, the SAFF Championship, and the King’s Cup are just a few of the competitions they will be taking part in.
  • India’s climb up the rankings could potentially lead to more recognition and support for the sport within the country. It could also attract more international attention and opportunities for the team to compete against higher-ranked teams.

The 1-0 and 2-0 win over Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan respectively last month ensured that India gained 8.57 rating points and five spots in the rankings.#IndianFootball #FIFA #FIFARankings #Football #SunilChhetri #Sports #IndianSports #MazaPlay pic.twitter.com/ot517qKTEU
