Five days. ₹210 billion combined from Reliance and Adani. A Guinness World Record. A Chinese robot dog presented as made-in-India. And queues that stretched kilometres outside Bharat Mandapam. The India AI Impact Summit 2026 — the first major global AI gathering in the Global South — ended on February 20 with enough wins, mishaps, and big-money pledges to fill a year’s worth of coverage.

The Summit in Four Storylines
The Money Was Real. Reliance and Adani’s combined $210 billion AI infrastructure pledge — covering data centres, server manufacturing, sovereign cloud, and renewable-powered compute — is the largest single-event investment commitment in India’s tech history. OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Google all made substantive partnership or investment announcements. The NYT’s framing — “India brims with tech talent but not the companies that command it” — captures the challenge; the summit was a deliberate attempt to change that.
The Robots Were Complicated. Galgotias University was asked to vacate its exhibition stall after a professor falsely presented a commercially available Unitree Go2 — a Chinese-made robot dog — as an in-house creation. The university later clarified it was using globally available tools for AI programming. The controversy overshadowed genuinely impressive indigenous hardware at the same expo: Addverb’s Elixis industrial humanoid (IIT Kanpur), xTerra Robotics’ Svan M2 quadruped, and General Autonomy’s Param robot dog from Bengaluru.

The Record Was Remarkable. The IndiaAI Mission, in partnership with Intel India, set a Guinness World Record for the most AI responsibility pledges in 24 hours — 250,946 valid pledges against an initial target of 5,000. A 50× overshot on a pledge campaign is a legitimately unusual outcome.
The Chaos Was Real Too. IT Minister Vaishnaw apologised for Day 1 problems, media had conflicting access instructions, roads were gridlocked, and Bill Gates — announced as a keynote speaker — did not appear. The organisational stumbles did real damage to the event’s international credibility and dominated global coverage more than the investment announcements.
