Let’s have a look into the match highlights : ICC World Cup 2023 – Netherlands vs Afghanistan

Netherlands won the toss and chose to bat, setting a target of 180 runs for Afghanistan. Max O’Dowd was the standout performer for the Dutch, scoring 42 runs off 40 balls. However, Mohammad Nabi’s clever move to bring himself into the bowling attack paid off as he claimed O’Dowd’s wicket with a direct hit run-out. Colin Ackermann, Sybrand Engelbrecht, and other Dutch batsmen faced the spin challenge as Afghanistan maintained pressure. Netherlands was eventually bowled out for 179 runs in 46.3 overs.

In their chase, Afghanistan lost two early wickets but recovered thanks to a strong partnership between Rahmat Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. Rahmat Shah reached a well-deserved half-century, guiding Afghanistan closer to victory. Hashmatullah Shahidi also played a pivotal role in the chase.

Afghanistan’s remarkable performance in the tournament can be attributed not only to the players’ skills but also to their strong support staff. Former England legend Jonathan Trott serves as the team’s head coach, while former Indian captain Ajay Jadeja is the team mentor. Jadeja’s presence has provided a unique advantage in understanding the pitch, conditions, and opposition.

While Netherlands hasn’t had a smooth campaign, they have showcased their potential by defeating South Africa. Afghanistan, on the other hand, continues to impress with their historic run in the World Cup. Afghanistan will face challenges ahead as they take on Australia and South Africa. With 8 points from seven matches, they are still in contention for a spot in the semi-finals.
