After Riot Games canceled the game and shut down developer Hypixel Studios in June 2025, few expected a resurrection. But the founders have repurchased the rights, and early access is launching soon. Here’s why this matters to every Minecraft enthusiast.
The Phoenix Rising: What Happened?
Hytale is developed by Simon Collins-Laflamme, founder of Hypixel—the most popular public server for Minecraft. After ten years in development limbo, the founders have rescued the studio with plans for early access, committing to 10 years of funding with no outside investors.
What Makes Hytale Special?
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Developer Pedigree | Created by Hypixel founder and Minecraft veterans |
| Development Start | 2015 (10 years of refinement) |
| Price Point | Under $30 confirmed |
| Early Access | Date announcement coming days |
| Platform | PC launch, other platforms later |
| Funding Commitment | 10 years guaranteed |
Why Minecraft Players Should Care
Unlike typical Minecraft modpacks, Hytale is developed from the ground up using only Minecraft’s code as the base, with brand-new terrain generation, combat mechanics, and mob animations. Think of it as “Minecraft 2” made by the community, for the community.
The game combines Minecraft’s creative sandbox freedom with deep RPG mechanics—procedurally-generated worlds with fantasy elements, nuanced combat systems, and RPG depth that goes beyond Minecraft’s mining-focused gameplay.

What to Expect at Launch
Early access will include Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, and modding capabilities from day one, while minigames and Adventure Mode arrive later. Collins-Laflamme has been transparent: the game has rough edges and needs community feedback to shine.
The team has rehired over 30 original developers who know the game inside-out, using the previous in-house engine rather than starting from scratch—giving them a significant head start.
A Community-Driven Future
What separates Hytale from failed projects? Passion and authenticity. The founders personally fund the project because they believe in it. The team plans to stay in early access for at least a few years, refusing to rush development.

Frequently Asked Questions
When will Hytale’s early access release?
Will Hytale replace Minecraft?
Hytale isn’t meant to replace Minecraft but rather complement it. While Minecraft focuses on creative building and mining, Hytale emphasizes RPG mechanics, deeper combat systems, and procedural fantasy adventures—offering a different but equally compelling experience.
