Huawei launches 7nm Kirin 990 SoC with 5G at IFA 2019

Huawei has announced its new flagship 7nm Kirin 990 processor that comes with built-in 5G modem, it will power the Mate 30 series

At IFA 2019 Berlin, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Technologies Consumer Business Group, announced the world’s first flagship 5G SoC. Samsung too recently launched its Exynos 980 SoC with integrated 5G modem.

The Kirin 990 will power the next set of Huawei flagship smartphones starting with the upcoming Mate 30 series. This SoC is the world’s first mobile SoC with over 10 billion transistors.

Kirin 990 5G is the world’s first 5G SoC, and it will enable end users to access superb 5G connectivity experience one step ahead in the first year of 5G commercialization. To meet users’ requirements for enhanced 5G experiences in the 5G era, Kirin 990 5G has been fully upgraded in terms of performance and power efficiency, AI computing, and ISP, extending mobile phone experiences to a new level.

It is based on the 7nm EUV process which makes the chip power efficient and comes with a separate 5G modem. The 5G modem embedded into the mobile application processor can offer download speeds of up to 2.3Gbps and upload speeds of up to 1.23Gbps.

Huawei’s Kirin 990 SoC is an octa-core processor with 2 high-performance Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.86GHz and 2 Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.36GHz. The other four Cortex-A55 cores are clocked at 1.95GHz.

The Kirin 990 is touted to be the world’s first flagship 5G SoC because the Exynos 980 processor will power the mid-range Samsung devices rather than the flagship Galaxy S smartphones.

Huawei has confirmed that the Kirin 990 will power the Mate 30 series that is all set to launch on September 19. The company has added that the Mate 30 series will get the Kirin 990 5G and non 5G processors depending on the 5G-ready markets.
