Hollywood Watchlist: Overview

Big Screen Picks (October 16)

Whalefall is the one for anyone who likes their thrillers with real stakes. Josh Brolin and Austin Abrams star, with Brian Duffield directing. After losing his father, Jay goes diving to find his remains and gets swallowed by a giant whale. He has just an hour of oxygen left, and the survival lessons his dad taught him may be his only way out. It’s part adrenaline, part heartbreak.

Street Fighter is the franchise’s latest jump to the big screen, and you can read more about the games on Wikipedia. Set in 1993, it follows former friends Ryu and Ken, pulled back into the ring when Chun-Li invites them to the World Warrior Tournament. The tournament is a cover for a dangerous plot by M. Bison and Shadaloo. Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Callina Liang and Vidyut Jammwal star, and it’s Jammwal’s Hollywood debut, a proud moment for Indian fans. Kitao Sakurai directs.

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is your family-friendly option. With Halloween close, Shaun and the flock secretly grow pumpkins for jack-o’-lanterns, until the clumsy Farmer flattens the whole patch. Expect gentle chaos and plenty of laughs.

Disclosure Day comes from Steven Spielberg and features Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson. A cybersecurity expert and a local TV meteorologist meet and uncover a personal link to cosmic life on Earth. It’s a good pick if you enjoy slow-burn mysteries.

VisionQuest sends Vision (Paul Bettany) into hiding after WandaVision, where he questions who he really is. He does that by talking with the AI personas inside him, including FRIDAY, EDITH, JARVIS and a very opinionated Ultron (James Spader). Want more Marvel talk? Techno Sports has you covered.

Crystal Lake goes back to 1971, eight years before the original Friday the 13th. Linda Cardellini, Callum Vinson and Will Catlett star as Pamela Voorhees struggles with the presumed drowning of her young son, Jason, at Camp Crystal Lake. Horror fans, this is your origin story.

Streaming on Prime Video and Netflix

Love of Your Life (Prime Video) stars Margaret Qualley as Maya, an ER nurse who meets Charlie after buying a bedside table off Craigslist. They fall in love and build a life in Boston, until a devastating loss leaves Maya lost. Rachel Morrison directs this story of grief and healing, so keep tissues nearby.

TYSON (Netflix) tells Mike Tyson’s life in his own words, from a rough Brooklyn childhood and heavyweight glory to addiction, breakdowns and the infamous ear bite. With rare access to family, friends and rivals, it’s an honest look at greatness and its cost.

The Diplomat season 4 (Netflix) brings back Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell and Allison Janney. Kate and Hal’s marriage is falling apart, and Grace and Todd’s relationship is under strain as personal drama collides with high-stakes politics.

Want adrenaline? Go for Whalefall or Street Fighter. Want a cozy night in? Try Love of Your Life or The Diplomat. Love sci-fi and mystery? VisionQuest and Disclosure Day are your best bets. Check back with Techno Sports next week for a fresh list.
