Yesterday, BCCI announced that Rohit Sharma will be the new ODI captain replacing Virat Kohli. Kohli earlier had announced his retirement from his captaincy career from T20I and IPL. However, BCCI decided to remove Virat as the captain from ODI as well, stating that having two different captains will be a bad option.

A BCCI official in his statement stated ’No way we would have continued with separate T20 & ODI captains. BCCI always wanted consistency in leadership & thought process. Everyone saw, we could not succeed in big events & T20 World Cup was the end of any debate. The selectors are also in favor of Rohit Sharma (not Virat Kohli) as White-Ball leader & we are confident under him team will deliver great results in big ICC events.’

Here are the Reasons behind removing Virat Kohli from the Indian ODI captaincy

Virat Kohli has actually explained the thought process of the BCCI officials. They made a serious talk with Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid before making the decision. Kohli had talked about Test captaincy but the officials brought in the topic of ODI captaincy. He was told to abandon his captaincy in ODI because there wasn’t any point in keeping two captains in two different formats for the Indian film.

BCCI on Wednesday announced that Rohit Sharma will be leading the T20I and ODI teams.

One of the top Test cricketers from India said “It’s clear BCCI was not too happy with Kohli. It’s clear that he was fired. If not, then where was the need of announcing Rohit Sharma as ODI captain when only test squad is being announced. It’s clear all was not well between the BCCI & Kohli on captaincy issue”

Virat Kohli has not given his statement nor has he congratulated Rohit Sharma on social media. No congratulatory message has come from his side. Clearly, Kohli was left shocked by BCCI’s decision. There is a rumour that Virat Kohli may not play the three matches of the ODI series followed by Tests in South Africa.
