Six years after it first captured hearts, “Heartstopper” says goodbye — and Alice Oseman made sure the ending felt earned, honest, and true to everything the story stood for.

Heartstopper Forever: Nick And Charlie’s Final Chapter

“Heartstopper Forever” covers Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie’s (Joe Locke) entire final year together before university. Charlie becomes Head Boy at Truham and returns to therapy, building an identity that doesn’t depend on constantly being beside his boyfriend. Meanwhile, Nick grows increasingly anxious and withdrawn as he decides on university, ultimately choosing Leeds — a decision he’s initially afraid to share with Charlie.

The Breakup That Almost Wasn’t Permanent

Yes, Nick and Charlie do briefly break up in the film — a conflict Oseman drew not from her final graphic novel (where this doesn’t happen) but from an earlier Nick and Charlie novella she wrote back in 2015, before Heartstopper even existed. The rupture comes from Nick’s fear and uncertainty about the future, not a loss of love.

By the end of the same day, though, they find their way back to each other, recognizing that they still love each other and still want a shared future. The film’s final stretch takes them through prom, graduation, and one more emotional beat: Charlie boarding a train to visit Nick in Leeds.

The Bittersweet Note For Elle And Tao

Not every couple gets a happy ending here. Elle and Tao’s relationship doesn’t survive the film — the two clash over Elle’s plan to move to Berlin for art school, with Tao struggling to commit to regularly visiting her.

The Symbolic Final Scene

The film closes with Charlie and Nick flipping through a memory book Charlie made, filled with photos of their relationship — but with plenty of blank pages left. Oseman explained the symbolism directly: “It says the story goes on. This isn’t the end for Nick and Charlie. They’re still only 18 and 19. They’ve got their whole lives ahead of them.” As a nice touch, Oseman herself makes a cameo, appearing as a woman reading on the train Nick boards to Leeds.
