Harnaaz Sandhu wins Miss Universe 2021 title; first from India in 21 years

India now has 3 women who have won the Miss Universe title. The first woman was Sushmita Sen in 1994, the second woman was Lara Dutta. After 21 years, Harnaaz Sandhu has brought back the crown home.

Ms Sandhu represented the country today at the 70th Miss Universe 2021 which was held in Eilat, Israel. The 21-year old from Punjab won the crown defeating Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira and South Africa’s Lalela Mswane. She was presented the crown by Andrea Meza who was the former Miss Universe 2020 from Mexico.

She was asked what advice she would give to young women to deal with the pressures they face, she answered “The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves, to know that you are unique and that’s what makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide. This is what you need to understand. Come out, speak for yourselves because you are the leader of your life, you are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that’s why I am standing here today “
