Hacks Season 5 Episodes 6 & 7 Ending Explained: Deborah Rejects AI, Kisses Ava

Just when Hacks Season 5 felt like it was coasting, episodes 6 and 7 arrived like a double espresso shot — sharp, funny, and unexpectedly emotional. Titled QuikScribbl and Montecito, both episodes were released together on May 7, 2026, on HBO Max. Together they tackle AI, creative ownership, hidden health secrets, and a fake relationship that ends up revealing something very real. Here is the full breakdown.

Hacks S5 Episodes 6 & 7 — Key Details

Episode 6 — The QuikScribbl AI Deal Explained

Graham Sweeney, a tech investor, wants Deborah and Ava to help him with QuikScribbl — an AI program designed to make people sound smarter, sharper, and funnier online. The plan is to feed Deborah’s history of comedy into the software so users can borrow her voice and personality.

Ava sees this as creative theft while Deborah initially sees it as admiration. Ava argues that AI is not some harmless shortcut — it eats creative labour, weakens the path for new writers, and pretends theft is innovation if someone puts a clean logo on it. SoapcentralFandomWire

Deborah almost convinces herself the money makes it worth it — until Graham overplays his hand. Graham ruins his own pitch when he suggests that his AI could eventually help Deborah write her material. So Deborah walks away from the deal. Better still, she rethinks The Diva entirely — instead of a bloated monument to herself, she decides to build a smaller, proper comedy club where younger performers can sharpen their voices. This is Hacks at its most culturally resonant. The AI debate here mirrors real anxieties in the creative industry — for a broader look at how AI is reshaping creative labour, see Wikipedia’s page on artificial intelligence and creative work. Episode 7 — The Montecito Kiss Ending Explained

Episode 7 focuses on a trip to Montecito, where Deborah wants a vintage jumpsuit owned by a rival. She and Ava pretend to be a couple in front of Kelly and Monica to get access to it. PRIMETIMER

The fake romance quickly becomes a vehicle for real confrontation. Ava finds out that Deborah lied to her — Deborah had told Ava she went to a wellness retreat, but in reality she had a medical procedure and hid it. To retaliate, while sitting on the couch, Ava asks Deborah to kiss her. Deborah gives her a small kiss, and then a longer, more extended one.

After the kiss, Deborah tells Ava the truth — she hid the procedure because she does not like people worrying about her. They then tell Kelly and Monica the truth about the fake relationship. The manufactured connection is dismantled, but the real one between Deborah and Ava hangs in the air, electric and unresolved. PRIMETIMER
