The music world is buzzing with controversy as Guru Randhawa, one of Punjab’s most celebrated artists, finds himself at the center of a storm following the release of his latest music video “Azul.” After days of mounting criticism and social media backlash, the singer has finally responded—but not in the way fans expected.

Guru randhawa breaks silence on azul controversy

Guru Randhawa’s Cryptic Response to the Azul Backlash

Breaking his silence amid the growing controversy, Guru Randhawa shared a cryptic Instagram post on Friday, August 29. Instead of addressing the criticism directly, he posted analytics showing that Azul had garnered over 107,000 views in just one hour, alongside more than 27,000 searches on YouTube.

His caption read: “Azul is Azuling 🍷. When God is with you, you only move forward ❤️”, suggesting he views the attention—positive or negative—as validation of his success.

The Azul Controversy Explained

Controversy Details	Information
Video Release	Earlier this month (August 2025)
Main Criticism	Alleged sexualization of schoolgirls
Video Concept	Teacher-student dynamic in school setting
Public Response	Widespread social media outrage
Celebrity Support	Sonam Kapoor liked critical posts
Singer’s Action	Restricted Instagram comments

The controversy centers around the music video’s portrayal of Randhawa as a photography teacher who appears mesmerized by a student in school uniform. Critics argue that the storyline crosses dangerous lines by romanticizing inappropriate teacher-student dynamics.

Why the Azul Video Sparked Outrage

Guru Randhawa’s Azul video has been criticized for several troubling elements:

The video opens with Randhawa portraying a photography teacher preparing for a group photo, with actor Anshika Pandey styled in a school uniform performing dance sequences. What particularly disturbed viewers was the way the video portrayed the teacher’s fascination with the student.

Social media users didn’t hold back their criticism. One user wrote: “Guru Randhawa’s new song Azul has him ogling at girls in school uniforms, and when people started pointing it out on Insta, he restricted comments”. The backlash intensified when critics noted that the video normalizes predatory behavior in educational settings.

The controversy gained momentum when actor Sonam Kapoor ‘liked’ a widely circulated Instagram post that accused Randhawa of depicting schoolgirls in a sexualized way, signaling her support for the criticism.

Social media platforms exploded with negative reactions. Users expressed discomfort not just with the storyline, but with the broader implications of such content reaching impressionable audiences.

Legal Troubles Beyond Azul

Guru Randhawa isn’t just dealing with the Azul controversy. His latest song ‘Sirra’ has also sparked a dispute, leading to a summons from a Ludhiana court. A complaint filed by Rajdeep Singh Mann alleges that the lyrics of ‘Sirra’ are offensive and promote drug use, specifically objecting to lines that reference opium.

The Singer’s Strategic Silence

Rather than issuing a public apology or clarification, Randhawa responded to mounting criticism by restricting comments on his Instagram account. This move has been widely interpreted as damage control, but many argue it shows a lack of accountability.

The singer, known for chart-topping hits like “Lahore” and “High Rated Gabru,” has built his career on catchy tunes and mass appeal. However, this controversy raises important questions about artistic responsibility in the digital age.

The Broader Impact on Punjabi Music Industry

This isn’t an isolated incident in Punjabi music. Artists including Honey Singh and Karan Aujla have previously faced inquiries from the Punjab Women’s Commission over songs deemed derogatory or harmful. The Azul controversy highlights ongoing concerns about content that may influence young audiences negatively.

The incident has sparked broader dialogue on the responsibility of artists and media creators in an age where a single video can reach millions overnight.

What This Means for Guru Randhawa’s Career

Guru Randhawa finds himself navigating one of the most challenging phases of his career. While Azul continues to trend and gain views, the negative publicity surrounding both this video and his legal troubles with “Sirra” could impact his brand image significantly.

The controversy serves as a stark reminder that in today’s connected world, artistic choices come with greater scrutiny and responsibility. For an artist of Randhawa’s stature, the expectations extend beyond entertainment to include social consciousness.

The Bottom Line

Guru Randhawa’s cryptic response to the Azul controversy reveals an artist who seems more focused on view counts than addressing legitimate concerns about his content. While his statement “When God is with you, you only move forward” suggests confidence, the mounting legal troubles and social media backlash indicate this controversy is far from over.

As the music industry evolves, artists must balance creative freedom with social responsibility. The Azul controversy will likely serve as a case study for how not to handle public criticism in the digital age.
