The Story: Survival Beyond the Bunker

The sequel picks up five years after the Clarke comet decimated Earth. The Garrity family—John (Gerard Butler), Allison (Morena Baccarin), and their son Nathan—must abandon their Greenland bunker and traverse the frozen, shattered landscape of Europe searching for habitable territory. Director Ric Roman Waugh promises a post-apocalyptic thriller that explores themes of displacement, resilience, and family bonds tested by extinction-level circumstances.

Production Journey: From Cannes to Cinema

The sequel’s path to theaters proves almost as dramatic as its plot. STX Entertainment secured worldwide distribution rights for $75 million at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, signaling major confidence in the franchise. However, STX’s bankruptcy complications delayed production until Lionsgate acquired US distribution rights in May 2024.

Principal photography ran from April through July 2024 across Shinfield Studios and locations in Hampshire, England, plus Iceland’s stark landscapes—perfect for depicting a world rebuilt from ruin. The production deliberately chose these frozen territories to underscore the film’s themes of survival against impossible odds.

Release Date Shuffle

Originally scheduled for March 28, 2025, the film was postponed indefinitely before landing its current January 9, 2026 slot. This date positions Migration as a winter blockbuster, potentially benefiting from the disaster film genre’s appeal during the post-holiday box office lull.

Lionsgate’s Mutiny vacated the January 9 date to make room, shifting to Summer 2026 instead—a vote of confidence in Butler’s franchise potential.

What Made the First Film Work

The 2020 original earned $52.3 million worldwide despite pandemic theater closures, then became a streaming phenomenon. Its success stemmed from grounding large-scale disaster in intimate family stakes rather than spectacle alone. Butler’s everyman engineer fighting to protect his family resonated with audiences seeking survival thrillers with emotional weight.

The sequel expands this formula from confined American highways to Europe’s devastated expanse, raising both geographical and emotional stakes. Early trailers suggest a darker, more desperate tone as the Garritys confront not just environmental dangers but other survivor groups competing for scarce resources.

Behind the Camera

Director Ric Roman Waugh returns after helming Gerard Butler’s recent action vehicles including Angel Has Fallen and Kandahar. His working relationship with Butler has created a reliable action-thriller partnership. Writers Chris Sparling (Buried) and Mitchell LaFortune craft a narrative balancing action set pieces with character development.

Producers include Butler himself alongside Basil Iwanyk (John Wick), ensuring the action franchise maintains quality standards.

Where to Watch the Original

Before the sequel drops, catch Greenland (2020) streaming on Max or rent/purchase through Prime Video. The film’s recent holiday viewership surge proves audiences are primed for the continuation.
