Google Pixel Fold could launch in 2022 with a modest camera configuration

Google has long been rumored to be making a foldable Pixel. Rumors of a “Pixel Fold” date back to 2019 but haven’t been followed by any conclusive announcement or even a proper leak. Google usually has a difficult time keeping leakers away from its products, too, so that we’ve yet to see any visual details of the foldable Pixel likely means the company is expending more effort keeping its intricacies under wraps.

But now, 9to5Google’s APK Insight team has discovered this information in files associated with the latest edition of the Google Camera app. The teardown suggests that the Pixel Fold may not use the 50-megapixel GN1 sensor found on the Pixel 6 series, and instead opt for the 12.2-megapixel IMX363 sensor integrated into the Pixel 5. This has been in Pixel phones since 2018. Earlier, the Pixel foldable phone was reported to be called Passport, but now its codename is said to be ‘Pipit’.

The report adds that the Pixel Fold will additionally feature a 12-megapixel IMC386 sensor for ultra-wide photography. Furthermore, the foldable phone may also come with two 8-megapixel IMX355 sensors for selfies and video calls. One sensor is said to sit on top of the outer display and the other will be used when the phone is unfolded to reveal the larger screen real-estate.

Google’s Pixel foldable is expected to arrive sometime in 2022. It was previously believed that Google would announce a foldable during its most recent Pixel 6 launch event, but that didn’t end up happening.

The latest evidence of a 2022 release is referenced by “isPixel2022Foldable” that’s mentioned in the Camera APK’s code. If we refer to other similar references like “IsPixel2019”, which referred to the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, then we can make the assumption that the phone is arriving next sometime next year.
