Google Pixel 8 Pro Price and Specs – Everything we know

Google Pixel 8 Pro Price and Specs: All You Need to Know

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are expected to be two of the greatest Android phones of 2023, but we have yet to hear any official confirmation from the company. According to leaks and rumors, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will be released in the second half of 2023.

We expected to see a teaser of these at Google I/O 2023, alongside the announcement of the Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet, but that did not happen. The Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro were initially teased at I/O 2022, but these phones are still a mystery.

Google took the lessons learned from its first-generation Tensor-powered devices and offered a well-rounded solution at low rates that undercut the competition with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. But, with those phones firmly established as the leaders of the smartphone market, it’s time to look ahead to what the Pixel series has in store.

Whatever we thought of last year’s flagships, there’s always space for improvement. Many Pixel 8 specifications are still unknown, but we do know a few critical details about Google’s upcoming flagship phones.

The flagship Pixel 8 Pro appears to be getting a built-in thermometer, as seen in a leaked video in mid-May. The feature is a contactless thermometer that monitors the temperature of your skin to help you identify if you’re sick. It’s not a novel feature for smartphones, but it’s the first time we’ve seen it on a Pixel device. This looks to be unique to the Pixel 8 Pro and will not be seen on the less expensive device.

The new camera bar is the most visible modification. Unlike previous generations, the camera lenses on this gadget are much more spread out over the handset, allowing each sensor some extra space and maybe helping to prevent the awful shattering issue we saw on last year’s phone. This time, they’re all in the same element. Two cameras were paired together on the Pixel 7 Pro, with the third camera operating independently.

In terms of specifications, we know that the Google Tensor G3 is now in testing. Google’s third-generation proprietary chipset, codenamed Zuma, is rumored to be based on the unreleased Samsung Exynos 2300 processor. It’s built on Samsung’s 3nm node, which according to developer Kamila Wojciechowski should be equivalent to TSMC, the foundry used by Qualcomm and Apple. Because the current Google Tensor G2 is still based on a 5nm processor, this could enhance efficiency and overall performance.

The phone’s screen corners appear significantly more rounded, more in line with a Galaxy S23+ than the S23 Ultra’s squared-off corners. In-depth display rumors appear to validate this design change, with Google tripling the radius of its curves. When viewing HDR content, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will have brightness boosts of up to 1,400 nits and 1,600 nits, respectively. Meanwhile, it appears that the Pixel 8 will have a 120Hz display, maybe to distinguish it from the Pixel 7a, which has a 90Hz panel.

Pricing has been one of the Pixel series’ greatest-selling features over the last two generations. While the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 Pro are priced similarly to other top-tier flagships, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 offer some of the finest value on the market.

Both phones managed to undercut the competition at $600, but not by much. It’s uncertain whether Google will be able to keep those prices for another generation, but we hope so. The Pixel 7a costs $50 more than the Pixel 6a, which costs $500, suggesting that all Pixel products will be priced more in 2023. We’ll have to wait and see.

An October release date appears to be a reasonable guess since Google has followed some predictable trends with phone launches, announcing products early in the month before releasing them a week or two later. If previous Pixel release dates are any indication, the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will be available in stores in mid-to-late October.
