During the I/O 2023 conference, Google revealed its most powerful Artificial Intelligence model, and since then, Gemini has triggered Google’s AI journey. Most recently, the company unveiled unprecedented intelligence in the aura of the I/O event and ushered the future prospects of Gemini. The company felt that with this amount of information being let out, it was paramount to reveal how Google Gemini obtained its name.

Google

All About Google Gemini’s Name

Gemini is a Latin word for twins while referring to the northern constellation that has a connection to the brightest stars, Pollux and Castor. Primarily, I/O was twinning. Moreover, underpinned, the project had initially been Titan, named after Saturn’s largest moon. Again, as Dean admitted, he was not entirely convinced but only became inspired by the final choice.

Dean also highlighted the decade-long AI breakthroughs of the DeepMind and Brain teams in scalable deep learning, the revolutionary Transformer architecture for large language models, deep reinforcement learning, and AlphaGo. In April 2023, Google brought all these teams under the banner of Google DeepMind to work on multimodal AI models. In the history of Google, many products were named after astronomical themes.

The name Gemini fits very well, according to Dean, with the storyline of the Brain and DeepMind collaboration and stems from the astrological figure of Twins, Gemini. Moreover, it nods to NASA’s Project Gemini, one of the first moonshot efforts that enabled the Apollo moon landings. For the team, the training of LLMs and the scale of the challenge it represents also felt a little bit like a moonshot.

The team was, therefore, moved after realizing how profoundly Project Gemini had secured Apollo’s triumph. The name “Gemini” was, perhaps, inspired when Jeff simply commented on it in a document. Regardless of the story behind the name, Google does not cease to elaborate more on the AI model’s capacity. The company has expanded the AI models’ narrative alongside the Gemini upgrade, and with the Android 15 addition, it will arrive by the end of this year for most compatible Pixel devices.
