Google’s most ambitious software move in years is getting real. Google‘s Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat confirmed at MWC 2026 that Aluminium OS is still on track for a debut later in 2026 — a unified platform that merges Android and ChromeOS into one AI-first operating system for laptops, tablets, and beyond.

What Aluminium OS Actually Is

Aluminium OS is an Android-based platform built with AI at its core, offering native access to Android apps with proper keyboard shortcuts, mouse support, and multi-window capabilities — not the clunky compatibility layer that ChromeOS used before.

Cross-device continuity is a major focus, with Handoff-style features already appearing in Android 17 APIs, letting users move app activity seamlessly between phones and laptops — Google’s answer to Apple’s ecosystem integration. The 2026 vs 2028 Timeline Debate

Here’s the nuance: court documents from Google’s antitrust case reveal that enterprise and education customers won’t see Aluminium until 2028, despite Samat’s optimistic public statements. Google’s “fastest path” is releasing test versions to select commercial trusted testers by end of 2026, with broader consumer rollout following.

Not all existing Chromebooks will migrate — Google’s VP of Chrome OS confirmed that differing technical specs will prevent some devices from upgrading, though 10-year security support on ChromeOS will continue through 2033. Stay updated on Google’s OS moves at TechnoSports.

FAQs

Will existing Chromebooks be able to run Aluminium OS?

Not all of them — Google has confirmed that some devices won’t migrate due to hardware limitations, but will receive ChromeOS support until 2033.

Is Aluminium OS replacing Chrome OS entirely?

Chrome OS will continue for education and enterprise use, while Aluminium OS targets the broader consumer laptop market — making it a dual-OS strategy rather than a full replacement.
